Friday Tasting: California Cabs – 2/10/17

This week we will be pouring a few of California’s flagship varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon!

Stuhlmuller 2013 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: Stuhlmuller Vineyards is located on the southern edge of the Alexander Valley, where it meets the Chalk Hill and Russian River Valley AVAs. The vineyard site consists of mostly alluvial gravel soils. Their 2013 estate Cabernet is made of three clones of the varietal, sourced from vines aged 10 to 25 years. The wine offers aromas of black cherry, cassis, and licorice along with savory notes of black olive and black tea. The palate is rich yet with a freshness of sweet berries and violets, and a long, bright finish. Pair with Korean-style short ribs.

Ilaria 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: Anna and Mario Monticelli are a winemaking power couple! They both earned their degrees in viticulture and enology at UC Davis, and have worked for esteemed Napa Valley producers including Trinchero, Bryant Family Vineyard, Piña, and Quixote. Today their shared project is In Vino Felicitas (“In Wine there is Happiness”). Their 2011 Ilaria Cabernet Sauvignon is made from grapes sourced from Simpkins Vineyard in Coombsville, Arcano Vineyard in the Atlas Peak Foothills, and Vitale Vineyard in Calistoga. Only 450 cases of this wine were produced. The Ilaria Cabernet offers aromas of huckleberry, blackberry, and currant; a plush palate of dark fruit, mingled with layers of purple flowers and volcanic mineral, and a toasty finish. Pair with meatloaf stuffed with Mozzarella, basil, and sun-dried tomatoes.

Sequoia Grove 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: Sequoia Grove is is a family-owned winery, founded in 1979, in Rutherford. They design their wines to express pure varietal character, be balanced through and through, and withstand the test of time. Their 2013 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon defines all these qualities. Deep red, with notes of blackberry, plum, mocha, and sage, this wine is fleshy and supple on the palate, with bittersweet chocolate and black cherry on the finish. Pair with chuck roast braised long and low until very tender.
