Friday Tasting: Lo-Fi, Clos du Gravillas, and Acumen
September 28, 2017
Join us Friday, September 29th, 5-8pm, for a FREE wine tasting!
This week, we’ll be showing a few distinct wines from very different climates and soil types.
Lo-Fi 2015 Oak Savannah Vineyard Chardonnay, Santa Barbara: Lo-Fi is a partnership of two friends Mike and Craig. They make wines from Santa Ynez, and believe in minimal intervention in the vineyard and the cellar; the idea of nothing added, nothing taken away. The fruit in their 2015 Chardonnay comes from Oak Savannah vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley. The vines are grown on Chamise loam. The wine was fermented in 100% neutral French oak barrels, then aged for eight months in concrete amphora. This Chardonnay offers aromas of ripe peach, banana, white flowers, and citrus, and has a pleasing, slightly creamy texture. Pair with bacon-wrapped scallops.
Clos du Gravillas 2016 “Sous les Cailloux des Grillons” Côtes-du-Brian: Clos du Gravillas is an 8-hectare vineyard, located within the Parc Naturel de Haut Languedoc. The terroir is crushed white gravel chips, and the estate is surrounded by classic Mediterranean brush (Garrigue), looking quite a bit like southern California. The entire domaine is certified organic by Ecocert. Their Côtes-du-Brian, cutely named for the crickets that hide under the rocks (Sous les Cailloux des Grillons), protected from the hot sun, is a blend of 30% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cinsault, 15% Carignan, 5% Terret Noir, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Grenache. The wine is fresh yet structured, offering red fruit aromas and fine tannins on the palate. Aged for only a year, not in oak, this wine is ready to drink now. Pair with lamb steaks, falafel, and roasted vegetables.
Acumen 2014 Mountainside Red Wine, Napa Valley: Acumen is a fairly new project in the Napa Valley, its inaugural vintage being 2013. But the wines are built from an older site: the Attelas Vineyard, planted in 1992 by Dr. Jan Krupp (who established the famous Stagecoach Vineyard). Acumen is located in the Atlas Peak AVA, which is unique for its high elevation and concentration of volcanic rock. All of Acumen’s estate vineyards are farmed organically by a year-round crew, all of whom receive full health insurance! The Acumen 2014 red blend consists of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Malbec, 19% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, aged for 18 months in mostly new French oak barrels. Aromas of rose petals, black cherry, mocha, loam, and blackberry pie. Full-bodied on the palate, with flavors of plums, blackberries, and baking spice. Pair with prime rib.
